It doesn’t take much to fall in love with “puppy eyes”. One of the biggest mistakes a future pet owner can do is to take the children to go pick out a pet, without first doing reasearch on the most suitable breed for your family.
If you are considering becoming a pet owner, be certain to also research your local shelter, if your are doing a rescue dog, or your local breeder if purchasing direct.
Having your homework done, before you traipse the family to the pound or a breeder is a wise move. I used to work with a breeder, and whenever a family came to “just look at puppies”, he always handed each child their own puppy. Now how hard do you think it was for that parent to walk away and say “oh no, thanks, we’re just looking”. Yep, most times it was a family battle to pick which child got to keep the puppy they had in their hands.
